Atos leads the ARTIST project to migrate legacy applications and services to the Cloud

A Consortium of ten leading academic and industry organisations, to provide the tools to assist the migration of software in order to achieve savings of 50% when compared to a manual migration

Madrid - Atos, an international information technologies services company, is the coordinating partner of the ARTIST European project, which is developing a set of methods, tools and techniques to facilitate the transformation of legacy software assets to a Cloud-based delivery model. ARTIST, which will require a 9.7 million euro investment, is promoted by ten partners from different European countries and is backed and partially funded by the European Commission.

The constant improvements to the speed, geographical coverage and reliability of Internet connections have increased the appeal of Cloud-based solutions. Traditional software solutions and service providers must adapt to the new reality of the Cloud, without disrupting the business continuity of their existing customers.

Given this need to support the evolution of the software and migrate it to the new service provision environment, companies must make a decision about whether to migrate their solutions, in which significant investments have been made, or to start from scratch, accepting the difficulty involved in calculating the cost of both options. Moreover, they must do so in a market where the Time to Market for products and services is critical.

ARTIST provides a software modernisation approach based on Model Driven Engineering techniques in order to assist the re-engineering of legacy applications to platform independent models suited to Cloud computing. This will significantly reduce the risk, time and cost of software migration, which today represent major barriers for organisations wanting to take advantage of the latest Cloud-based technologies.

The ARTIST project will continue until September 2015, delivering a toolset to assess, plan, design, implement and validate the assisted migration of legacy software to Software-as-a-Service. There are plans to create a repository for reusable components (models and transformations), a validation framework and a certification model for migrated applications.

Approximately 90% of software costs can be attributed to post-installation support, despite which legacy applications rarely achieve comparable performance levels to that of applications based on the latest technologies available. According to its partners, ARTIST will reduce costs by 50% when compared to traditional manual migration methods, which will make it possible to implement more frequent migration programmes to better and more cost-efficient platforms.

The ARTIST consortium, in which Atos is the coordinator, is formed of two universities (Tuwien-Austria and ICCS/NTUA-Greece), three research bodies (Tecnalia-Spain, responsible for the technical coordination of the project, Fraunhofer IAO-Germany and INRIA-France), and five companies: two large multinationals, Atos Spain), and Engineering (Italy), and three specialist SMEs (ATC-Greece, Spikes-Belgium and Sparx-Austria).

Clara Pezuela, Head of Cloud Research at Research & Innovation group in Atos, said: “ARTIST represents the application of the latest scientific knowledge from different fields to a critical business issue which many European companies are currently facing. Our objective is to help companies to evaluate whether their applications can be migrated to a Cloud environment at a reasonable cost, and in the event of a positive response, to give them and their software and service providers the necessary tools to achieve it. The project is committed to breaking down the Cloud barriers, thereby revitalising thousands of legacy applications which are not currently being used in an optimal manner.”

Atos cloud business, Canopy, will use the experience and outputs gathered from the ARTIST project to further enhance its Canopy Transformation Services offering, which provides industrialised services to move customers’ businesses to the Cloud and benefit from its rich portfolio of IaaS, PaaS and SaaS services.
