One of the country’s leading point of sale companies, UK Point of Sale, has thrown its support behind the campaign to rejuvenate Britain’s high streets.

In 2012, shopping guru Mary Portas launched her well-publicised search for the first ‘Portas Pilot’ towns, which would be run by local teams and be influenced by guidelines created by Mary herself.

Debra Jamieson, sales and marketing director at Manchester’s UK Point of Sale, says that although the campaign has not secured results as quickly as some may have expected – the focus it has brought to the high street has been “fantastic”.

“The face of our high street is changing – we are losing big names such as Comet but independent shops are consistently opening across the country,” she said. “The Portas Pilots may not have made a huge impact over the past 12 months in terms of monetary spend – but they have made an impact in terms of media attention and in turn have hopefully encouraged retailers to do as much as they can to stand out in the current market.”

As a point of sale manufacturer with more than 20 years’ experience, UK Point of Sale is advising customers as to what will help them stand out in tough financial times. The specialist believes it is essential retailers consider their merchandising.

Debra Jamieson hopes that next year more towns will have embraced the campaigns aiming to change them for the better.

She said: “We will continue to support all the efforts to revive our high street. We hope to see the town teams across the country making full use of the support they have been given – there are high streets all over the UK with closed shops and shops struggling in the current economic climate.

“We hope that next year the headlines will be about how the town teams have embraced these campaigns. How they’ve made a positive difference to the high streets rather than not making an impact at all.”
