Selects Nokia Siemens Networks’ standardized optical platform to provide 40-fold increase in bandwidth

Netia S.A., Poland’s largest alternative provider of fixed-line telecommunications services, has become the country’s first operator to introduce 100G (gigabit per second) wavelengths in its optical fiber network. Based on Nokia Siemens Networks’ optical transport DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) platform hiT 7300* and 100 GbE (Gigabit Ethernet)** transponder, the upgraded network provides a 40-fold increase in capacity. The solution was integrated seamlessly into Netia S.A.’s existing fiber optical infrastructure provided by a third party vendor, thereby protecting its investment in its infrastructure.

Netia S.A., one of the fastest growing telecommunications operators in Poland, is a pacesetter in providing reliable and high quality services to its customers. However, increasing use of smartphones and other bandwidth intensive devices were putting a strain on the existing fiber network. Instead of replacing the infrastructure, Nokia Siemens Networks connected the third party network to its multivendor 100 GbE (Gigabit Ethernet) transponder, which was seamlessly integrated into the existing network management systems. This increased the capacity of the existing optical network from 2.5G to 100G per channel.

“With this upgrade, we can transmit over a single fiber the capacity required for more than 800,000 broadband service customers to be connected simultaneously to the Internet,” said Marek Owczarski, technology development manager, Netia S.A. “We strive to deliver the most advanced services to our customers. Our preferred partner, Nokia Siemens Networks, is instrumental to that objective as it has the crucial understanding of our system’s requirements and roadmaps.”

“Netia S.A. not only protected its investment in the existing infrastructure, but also significantly expanded the capacity of the network for a fraction of the cost of having swapped out the existing infrastructure,” said Herbert Merz, head of Optical Networks, Nokia Siemens Networks. “We are confident that the upgrade to ultra-fast data transmission allows Netia S.A. to ensure a superior mobile broadband customer experience.”

On December 3, 2012, Nokia Siemens Networks and Marlin Equity Partners announced that they had reached an agreement for Nokia Siemens Networks to sell its Optical Networks business unit to Marlin Equity Partners. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2013. The announcement outlined that the deal would result in the unit being established as an independent company, named Coriant, with the goal of becoming a leading provider in the optical market.

Notes:
*Comprising the hiT 7300 and TransNet DWDM planning and automation tool, Nokia Siemens Networks’ DWDM offering provides a cost optimized, flexible and automated platform, thereby offering a viable answer to excessive traffic demand, reconfiguration and cost pressure issues. The design principle of the DWDM platform (hiT 7300) is based on high modularity as well as high re-use, thus creating a single platform from metro to core. It also provides network operators with a new level of simplicity for commissioning and maintaining DWDM systems while providing complete administrator control. The TransNet end-to-end planning tool provides optimal network design, guaranteed performance and automated configuration, resulting in saving significant operational expenditure as well as reduced outage time and procedural errors along with an exceptionally low total cost of ownership. With over 100 DWDM customers around the world, Nokia Siemens Networks provides a migration path to Terabit Optical Transport. It also provides scaling capacity for channels of 10/40/100 Gbps, with its platform being open to 400 Gbps and even more.

**Using the CP-QPSK (coherent polarization multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying) modulation format, the transponder integrated into hiT 7300 detects not only an optical signal’s amplitude, but also its phase and polarization. Its enhanced detection capability brings superior performance at highest bit rates, even in the presence of transmission impairments.
