Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse is core analytics engine with fabric-based connections, hybrid storage capabilities, and integrated data

COPENHAGEN and SAN DIEGO, California — Teradata (NYSE: TDC), the leading analytic data solutions company, today introduced the addition of two new components to the Teradata® Unified Data Architecture™, a fabric-based hyper-speed nervous system and a new core analytic brain - the Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse 6700 platform. These innovations enhance the ability of organizations to exploit all their data regardless of its type - to know more, and do more to outpace their competition.

The Teradata Unified Data Architecture, which was previously announced, brings together Teradata, Teradata Aster, and Hadoop technology as well as best-of-breed partner tools, to create a cohesive architecture. This new best-of-breed architecture makes Teradata the first vendor to provide a truly comprehensive framework to handle all types of data and any analytic techniques.

“With adoption of fabric-based computing, Teradata offers a high-speed, private analytic network with flexible configurations as the backbone of the entire Teradata Unified Data Architecture,” said Scott Gnau, president, Teradata Labs. “The speed of connection and robust management of fabric-based computing empowers our customers to take hyper-speed analytics and business insights to a new level.”

Teradata leverages industry-leading components within its Unified Data Architecture – some of which include: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server operating system, NetApp storage systems, Intel® Xeon® Processors, and now Mellanox InfiniBand for fabric-based computing.

“With the selection of Mellanox InfiniBand, Teradata has completed the move to a completely open hardware stack,” said Scott Gnau, president, Teradata Labs. “By leveraging an open stack of high volume hardware components, we can uniquely provide our customers with the highest quality, best performance, and quickest time to market.”

Teradata has selected Mellanox InfiniBand hardware to provide fast, reliable data flow and interconnection for all reporting and analytic applications that run on the workload-specific Teradata platforms, Teradata Aster Discovery Platform, as well as open-source Apache Hadoop. InfiniBand offers up to 20 times faster communication for all elements of the fabric-based computing for business intelligence. It offers the highest performance, scalability, and reliability to enable the processing of large amounts of data and the delivery of results in record time.

The combination of InfiniBand hardware and Teradata BYNET®V5 software offers customers a best-of-breed private network solution with breakthrough scaling and the fastest, most robust communication. BYNET software, field proven in thousands of massive parallel processing (MPP) systems, is Teradata’s secret sauce that provides on-the-fly, in-query data sorting, unique point-to-point, and broadcast communication functions. In addition, it intelligently links the processing units of the Unified Data Architecture to enhance performance. BYNET maximizes data movement across dual networks, leverages network fail-over capability for full availability, and easily scales to over 2,000 parallel processing units – enabling up to 61 petabytes of data in the Teradata Enterprise Data Warehouse.

“Data analytics has become a competitive asset for today’s enterprises that enables quicker reaction and response to changing business conditions and consumer behavior,” said Motti Beck, director, Enterprise Market Development, Mellanox Technologies. “When the Teradata Unified Data Architecture is integrated with Mellanox’s end-to-end InfiniBand solutions as the fabric-based computing foundation, customers reap the benefits of data analytics performance and response time. Together with Teradata, we enable organizations to transform their data into a competitive business advantage.”

Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse 6700

Within the Unified Data Architecture, the new Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse 6700 platform leverages the fabric-based computing benefits of BYNET on InfiniBand and offers differentiated, market-leading analytic capabilities.

The innovative technology built into the Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse has provided organizations with real business benefits. “As one of the leading banks in the Czech Republic and central Europe, Komercni Banka group (KB) has more than 2.5 million clients, 400 branches, and supports a broad variety of BI applications,” said Michal Ventruba, head of BI, Komercni Banka. “We depend on the Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse platform to help us gain insight and make quick decisions. Since our upgrade to a Teradata hybrid storage-based platform over one year ago, we have seen a significant boost in the speed of our solutions.”

According to Gnau, “We designed the Unified Data Architecture to be flexible enough to meet the individual needs of customers. It allows integration of open source Apache Hadoop with the Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse and all Teradata appliances. The result is an analytic environment capable of meeting the the operational and strategic needs of thousands of users, running hundreds of applications, on any data, at any time.”

Superior workload performance – Workload performance has been boosted by 40 percent over previous versions by leveraging the latest industry-leading Intel® Xeon® processor E5 family, capable of delivering record-breaking compute performance.

Faster answers to tactical business questions – The Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse has up to eight times more memory capacity per cabinet, with a typical system easily reaching multi-terabytes of memory. The expanded memory per cabinet is ready for analysis of the very “hottest” or frequently used data to boost performance on even the most data-intensive workloads.

Operating expense reduction – The boost in Teradata system performance enables customers to do the same data warehouse work using up to 50 percent less energy as compared to the Teradata platform of two years ago. In addition, the high-density, more efficiently organized cabinet enables a complete system with all infrastructure elements residing in one cabinet.

The Teradata Enterprise Active Enterprise Data Warehouse is now available for shipment.

Field-proven hybrid storage and system management
Customers continue to gain enormous benefit from the third generation of hybrid storage platforms built into the Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse. According to Gnau, “Teradata was the first vendor to provide customers with the fully automatic use of solid-state drives (SSD) and hard disk drives (HDD), driven by the “magic” of Teradata Virtual Storage™, intelligent storage management software. Hybrid storage solutions have proven to be just as fast and cost-effective as systems that rely solely on the in-memory capability.”

In addition, a single processing unit version of the Active Enterprise Data Warehouse 6700 is now available with the Teradata Data Mart Appliance 670 for those customers needing an entry or departmental warehouse, test, and development system.
