The new Ford Fiesta has an impressive lineage

When work began in 1972 on the first Ford Fiesta (code-named “Project Bobcat”), even Henry Ford II would have struggled to envisage the impact that the model would have on the automotive industry. 
 
The fuel crisis of 1973 lent further urgency to Ford’s aim to produce a compact, fuel-efficient vehicle, and the newest edition of the Ford Fiesta continues the trend. Ford’s cutting-edge 1.6-litre TDCi diesel engine utilises Start-Stop technology to achieve a class-leading combined fuel economy of 85.6 MPG. On top of saving its driver money, the new Fiesta’s efficiency is reflected in CO2 emissions at an all time low, beginning at 87g/km.
 
The name “Fiesta” was chosen personally by Henry Ford II in 1975, and the following year production of the first Ford Fiesta began in Valencia, Spain. The industry has progressed considerably since the car’s initial 1.0-litre Ghia engine, but the latest model still has the carnival attitude of its predecessors, and it can be chosen in one of 12 striking new colour schemes.
 
The Ford Fiesta’s influence progressed rapidly, and in 1982 it was voted the best car of its class in England and Germany for the sixth year running. 1989 saw the addition of ABS, making the Fiesta the first car of its class to include the innovative braking system, and four years later a driver airbag was fitted in standard models. These days the Ford Fiesta comes with an Intelligent Protection System, comprising a variety of airbags, and passenger safety is further enhanced by a brand-new Electronic Stability Programme.
 
As recently as 2011 the Ford Fiesta achieved a landmark total of 15 million sales worldwide, to celebrate its 35th anniversary. The newest addition to the Ford Fiesta roster is every bit the icon that its forebears were, and Ford has implanted an abundance of new technology to make sure that it remains a trailblazer. What Car? voted the Ford Fiesta “Best Supermini” of 2013, so the range’s knack for impressing is clearly as strong as ever.
