SKÖDA’s latest Octavia

Recently, SKÖDA produced its 15-millionth car. The milestone vehicle was an Octavia – fitting, given the car’s iconic status. SKÖDA’s newest offering to the Octavia range arrived in March 2013, and it is already attracting a surplus of attention.
 
A new design language, devised by SKÖDA design chief, Jozef Kabaň, provides a confident, athletic look, whilst retaining the classic Octavia’s stately charm. The wheelbase of the new model is 108mm longer, and the car 45mm wider than its predecessor, and though some motorists might miss the enhanced compactness of previous models, the new dimensions give extra presence on the road, and increased interior space.
 
Motorists have the option of three or four-spoke multifunction steering wheels, and a radio infotainment system which includes touch-screen displays of up to eight inches in size. The dashboard is just as convenient as you’d expect from a SKÖDA, but the addition of an electrically-controlled panoramic sunroof lets drivers fill the car with natural light, providing an unbeatable freshness. Lower the rear seats and you can optimise storage space at 1,580 litres, placing the new SKÖDA Octavia at the head of its class.
 
Performance and economy figures have improved significantly for this model, thanks to Start-Stop and Energy Recovery systems, which are fitted as standard. Motorists can choose from four engine options – two petrol and two diesel – ranging from 1.2 to 2.0-litres in capacity. Drivers who are willing to pay a little extra can choose the 2.0-litre TDI diesel, which achieves a respectable 0-60mph time of roughly 8.3 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is up to 74.3 MPG, a considerable increase on previous models, and CO2 emissions can dip beneath 100g/km, enabling you to benefit from lower road tax costs.
 
Nat Barnes, from the Daily Express, commented, “This is one of the most eagerly-awaited family cars for some time.” Opinions will differ on whether it lives up to the hype, but the new SKÖDA Octavia’s blend of strong performance and low running costs means that it is sure to be a favourite with families and executives alike.
