Colorado Springs, CO – Qualtek Manufacturing, a metal components manufacturing company, launched Q-munity© and created more than 17 local jobs (11 for people with disabilities) while expanding their commitment to sustainability through electronics recycling.  Qualtek’s Q-munity (http://www.qualtekmfg.com/q-munity.htm) represents actions and deliverables of Qualtek Manufacturing, Blue Star Recyclers and the Fagnant family.  In addition to creating jobs, Q-munity ethically recycled more than 3 million pounds of electronic waste, and established electronics recycling programs in six other communities that employ 23 local people with disabilities.

Qualtek’s Q-munity helped develop Blue Star Recyclers (www.bluestarrecyclers.com), a nonprofit social enterprise with a mission to create jobs for people with disabilities by recycling electronics.  “The timing of Q-munity could not be better,” stated Tony Fagnant, CEO of Qualtek.  “Less than 20% of electronic materials are being recycled in the U.S. while more than 80% of people with disabilities are unemployed.   Blue Star Recyclers shows there can be a 100% solution to these problems.”

The timing of Qualtek’s Q-munity also aligns with the July 1 implementation of the Colorado Electronic Recycling Jobs Act (http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite/CDPHE-HM/CBON/1251615964355).  The law prohibits disposing of electronic waste in landfills and requires local governments to provide a recycling option.  Q-munity is leveraging the proven results demonstrated by Blue Star Recyclers by helping six other communities establish electronics recycling programs that create local jobs for people with disabilities.  “Q-munity embodies the spirit of the law by creating new local jobs and providing sustainable, environmental options for local governments,” said Fagnant.
