Every year hundreds of newborns leave U.S. hospitals with undetected heart defects. New legislation now active in South Dakota aims to save those lives by mandating that all state hospitals provide a specific type of newborn heart screening. known as Pulse Oximetry.  Pulse Oximetry can identify newborns with specific critical congenital heart defects (CCHDs) also known as critical congenital heart disease. On average CCHDs account for about 25% of the total number of congenital heart defects cases. Without Pulse Oximetry screening, newborns with CCHDs can easily be overlooked as the symptoms of CCHD might not be apparent before a newborn leaves the hospital.  This new law takes effect in South Dakota on July 1, 2013.
