The Risk Of A Tax Nightmare, When You Go It Alone
Pulling back the curtain on tax software shortcomings
ROCHESTER, NY – Remember when former Treasury Secretary, Tim Geithner, testified on tax inconsistencies in his personal tax returns? Remember where he laid the blame? Turbo Tax. Local Enrolled Agent Al Burgos explains from a tax professional’s perspective.
“Folks have heard me say this before, but many tax pros regularly joke about how great these online software programs are for business. First of all, they aren’t as “easy to use” as they advertise, and additionally, they can become surprisingly expensive to taxpayers,” Burgos explained.
While they might seem cost effective on the surface, the unexpected or hidden costs of DIY tax software could be great.
“Using these types of programs can leave hundreds of dollars, or even thousands, on the table,” Burgos stated. “Even if you follow all of their rules and instructions perfectly, things can go wrong quickly. Clients bring in their prior year’s tax return all the time, and are just amazed at the amount of their money we’re able to find for them.”
Choosing the wrong method, or forms, in filing taxes can lead to an audit. Even without owing back taxes, a discrepancy of some kind in your return can send red flags to the IRS, and invite IRS agents to start looking through past tax filings and more.
“It can seem much simpler and cheaper to go it alone, but trusting a piece of software to catch all possible deductions is risky. Not to mention trusting that software not to put you in line for an audit,” Burgos said.
