According to recent reports, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) are currently finalizing their hospital control survey.  Once complete, the CMS is expected to conduct hospital infection control inspections in the near future.  Some in the industry see these actions as a likely prelude to forthcoming regulations meant to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

CMS’s hospital infection control survey is expected to contain a broad range of tools to assess infection control programs, hygiene, environmental services and other areas of concern.  The CMS’s focus on HAIs is an appropriate response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recent statement, “HAIs are an important public health problem. Approximately 1 out of every 20 hospitalized patients will contract an HAI.”

A new weapon employed in the fight against HAIs and other dangerous pathogens is ultraviolet germicidal irradiation technology developed by UltraViolet Device, Inc. (UVDI).  Last year, the company introduced the V-360° UV Room Sanitizer to the healthcare sector. The V-360° UV Room Sanitizer generates high intensity UV energy and quickly disinfects surfaces contaminated with viruses, bacteria and fungi, including superbugs such as MRSA, C. diff and CRE that cause illness and infection.

“A number of leading hospitals have already implemented the use of UVDI’s V-360° UV Room Sanitizer due to its superior disinfection performance aimed at decreasing hospital–associated infections,” stated Richard Hayes, President of UVDI.  “Lee Memorial Health Systems in Fort Meyers, Florida, recently conducted clinical trials that clearly demonstrated superior surface disinfection with the V-360 UV Room Sanitizer when compared to current common disinfectant cleaning protocols.  UV light technology using ultraviolet germicidal irradiation, also known as UVGI, offers infection control professionals a powerful new tool in the fight against HAIs.”
