South Kensington – Christie’s is pleased to present the opportunity for collectors to bid for an exceptionally rare pocket globe. Measuring just 2 ¾ inches (7cm) in diameter, the Dutch pocket globe by Johannes Deur dates from circa 1720 and is one of only a handful of examples known to exist, and is even contained within the original, silver-clasped, case. When it is offered within Christie’s bi-annual Travel, Science and Natural History auction on 24 April 2013, the piece is expected to realize between £15,000 and £25,000.

The globe is comprised of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores, heightened with gilt. The geography of the world looked very different: one can recognize the graduated equator, ecliptic and prime meridian; but no Antarctic continent is given, California is depicted as an Island, the coast of North-West Canada had yet to be explored, and there is no Australian East Coast, and only some of New Zealand. The hand-coloured engraved celestial gores on the inside of the case pick out the stars with varying amounts of gilt to symbolise six different degrees of brightness; the constellations are depicted with mythical beasts and figures.

James Hyslop, Specialist commented, “This is one of the best quality pocket globes I have ever seen come to market; the detail and quality of the engraving and hand-colouring is exquisite. It is a joy to behold and I think I was practically shaking with excitement when it came into Christie’s valuations counter! Not only is the cartography as beautiful as any of the maps produced by the Dutch master engravers, but it is of exceptional rarity with only three examples recorded: two in museums in Leiden and Krakow, and another that was with an art dealer from Amsterdam in 1891, location presently unknown. I am proud to be presenting collectors with the opportunity to bid on such an exceptional piece, and when it comes under the hammer in April we are anticipating a world record price for a printed pocket globe.”

The current world record price for a printed pocket globe is €27,402, achieved at an auction in October 2004.
