Yokohama, Japan – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. was awarded the first prize at the 2013 J-Win Diversity Awards, presented by the Japan Women’s Innovative Network (NPO J-Win), a nonprofit organization. Nissan won the Special Prize in 2008 and the Second Prize in 2012, making this the third time the company has received an award from NPO J-Win.

The J-Win Diversity Awards promote diversity and inclusion* as a management strategy for corporations. The awards celebrate companies that set diversity and inclusion – “advancement of women” – as a priority issue, take a proactive approach to continuously promote female leaders, integrate diverse capabilities and ideas, and establish an innovative corporate culture to create new values.

Nissan views diversity as a vital element in its response to global and diversifying customer needs. It believes that becoming a company where women can take a more active role in business also promotes the active utilization of diverse human resources, including men, and contributes to value creation for the company. Therefore, Nissan has implemented various initiatives to promote diversity globally.

In Japan, Nissan has continued its efforts to provide career support for female employees with the goal of increasing the population of women at the decision-making level. As a result, in 2012 the ratio Nissan’s female managers has more than quadrupled from 1.6 percent to 6.7 percent in the past eight years, while the percentage of women in senior managerial positions has doubled from 2 percent to 4 percent in the past four years.

Nissan offers ‘return-to-work seminars’ after childcare leave and has established the third in-house day care center as well as supports networking among younger women. The prize is in recognition of these efforts for improving the work-life balance and proactively provide a work environment for young female employees, who will be the next-generation leaders.

Nissan aims to deepen each employee’s understanding of diversity in order to maximize the value it brings to customers. The company will continue its efforts to grow sustainably while promoting true diversity and inclusion as a strengths of greater competitiveness.

* Diversity and inclusion refers to “accepting diverse people and utilizing their capabilities.” Mutual understanding and respect can maximize the potential, create innovation, and promote continuous corporate growth.
