The Weather Company Provides Big Data Solution to Chinese Meteorological Administration

Chinese weather enterprise decision makes China a global leader in the integration
of new DataCloud big data solution

BEIJING – The Weather Company International, today announced an expanded relationship with Huafeng Group, a division of the Chinese Meteorological Administration (CMA). Huafeng has completed installation of DataCloud™, The Weather Company’s proprietary big data management solution for national meteorological agencies, making the People’s Republic of China (PRC) a global leader in the integration of DataCloud. CMA and Huafeng will use DataCloud to power weather content sent to its clients across television, online, mobile and automotive products.

“DataCloud handles a country’s weather data – one of the biggest and most dynamic data sets in the world – by streamlining the data flow to offer more valuable and timely weather information,” said Bill Boss, vice president and managing director, APAC, for The Weather Company International. “This availability in China allows The Weather Company, in cooperation with the CMA, to provide the best weather forecasts via media channels, digital products or mobile device manufacturers, which in turn help citizens plan their daily lives and make decisions based on weather.”

The DataCloud solution aggregates a country’s weather data sets into a simplified, easy-to-use format for better weather visualization, forecasting, warning dissemination and public communication through television or digital platforms. CMA and Huafeng produce all weather broadcasts for China Central Television (CCTV) and other consumer and enterprise clients, so The Weather Company International will drive global forecast television presentations seen throughout the PRC.

“As a long-term partner, The Weather Company International has provided Huafeng outstanding support, products and services. The DataCloud expansion makes it possible for Huafeng to offer more unique data to viewers, consumers and clients through a fully redundant and operational system,” said Mr. Shi Shu Wei, president of Huafeng.

Since 2006, Huafeng has utilized software solutions from Weather Central, acquired in 2012 by and now a subsidiary within The Weather Company, in order to produce more than 70 weather presentations a day. The Weather Company International’s broadcast solutions also currently power Huafeng’s 24x7 weather channel, China Weather TV. The DataCloud addition will incorporate The Weather Company’s unique data and forecast model and bring Huafeng to fully redundant and operational levels. This allows for a more accurate, automated method of producing weather forecasts to help improve dissemination of information and potentially save lives.

The Weather Company International has more than 35 clients throughout the PRC that include national (Huafeng), provincial and city level CMA offices that produce hundreds of weather presentations daily and seen throughout China by more than 600 million viewers daily.
