Burbank, CA –– As part of its commitment to inform and motivate underserved communities, Novelas Educativas® has dubbed one its most popular videos, Amor Escolar into the Mixecto language. Watch on YouTube: http://youtu.be/wOsEWUoTBZU

Originally in Spanish, Amor Escolar is currently used nationwide in parent engagement and ELL (English Language Learner) programs. The film shows the dynamic that exists between a mother and her daughter who is a first-generation college student taking classes at a community college.

“We use Novelas Educativas with our Latino families to help explain the U.S. education system. Many of the Mixtec families don’t speak Spanish and this new video will help families understand how to help support their child’s education and college planning,” says Gabriela Kovats-Murillo, Director, College and Career Success at Barrio Logan College Institute in San Diego, CA.

Mixtecos are an indigenous group from Mexico, primarily from the state of Oaxaca. As of 2011, an estimated 150,000 Mixteco people were living in California, and 25,000-30,000 in New York City. Large Mixtec communities exist in border cities of San Diego, CA and Tucson, Arizona.

“This year we’re partnering with organizations to translate and dub all of our Novelas into Mixteco and to produce original Mixteco films on social issues,” says Miguel Orozco, Co-Founder of Novelas Educativas®.

With telenovelas being a force in TV programming, Novelas Educativas® uses Entertainment-Education (E-E) strategies and telenovela style dramas to connect with diverse communities. Viewers are hooked on storylines with universal themes and with characters that overcome cultural and language barriers. The website novelaseducativas.com showcases films that not only entertain, but also accurately portray challenges faced by many.
