An unregistered dentist in Stoke-on Trent has been prosecuted for running an illegal practice.

Earlier this month the UK regulator of dental practice, the General Dental Council (GDC), successfully prosecuted Ms Joana Antunes Catre Dos Santos, who was working as a dentist at the Advanced Dental Clinic in Stoke.

Ms Santos pleaded guilty to four offences of unlawfully practicing dentistry whilst not registered, failing to adhere to Section 38 (1) and (2) of the Dentists Act 1984.

All dental professionals including dentists, dental nurses, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental therapists and orthodontic therapists must be registered with the GDC to work in the UK.

However Ms Santos has never registered with the GDC. She was fined £600 for each of the four offences and ordered to pay £1,500 towards council costs.

In addition she must pay a victim surcharge of £120 and a total of £248 in victim compensation.

One UK organisation which has set out to highlight the issue of illegal dentistry is the British Association of Clinical Dentistry (BACDT). Speaking on behalf of the trade association, Richard Daniels, CEO, commented on the prosecution stating, “We strongly agree with the GDC’s decision to penalise Ms Santos for posing as a dentist and hope it sends a strong message to others throughout the UK.

“Individuals who decide to practice any type of dental profession unlawfully not only damage the reputation of the industry but also pose a significant risk to innocent patients oral health and safety.“

The BACDT would recommend that all patients ensure they check their dental professional is experienced and a registered member of the GDC.All complaints all suspicions should be logged to the council.”

The BACDT is a leading professional associations which promotes the advancement of certified practices within clinical dental technology.
