Women pilots, female technicians and male flight attendants talk about their jobs

On 25 April 2013, about 300 school pupils will have an opportunity to look behind the scenes at Germany’s largest airline. The aim of the Lufthansa Girls´Day and Boys’Day is to introduce young adults to professions that are often perceived as stereotypically male or female domains. The events will be held in Hamburg, Bremen, Cologne, Seeheim-Jugenheim, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt. All candidates must register via the career portal www.be-lufthansa.com.

Pupils are offered an exclusive programme. At Frankfurt, it includes a visit to the Lufthansa Flight Training Center, where they discover everything there is to know about pilot training and meet women pilots. Male flight attendants, meanwhile, explain the various duties and responsibilities they have to perform during a flight. At the Lufthansa Technik workshops, practical exercises reveal the career opportunities for girls in a high-tech environment. “Often it’s just a lack of information about specific occupations that inhibits young men and women from contemplating a career in a profession that’s generally considered to be dominated by the opposite gender. Lufthansa is therefore very happy to support the nationwide “Girls’ Day” / “Boys’ Day” as an information platform,” says Frank Schmith, Director HR Marketing and Recruitment, Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

Even though it will be some time before the participants in the Girls’ Day and Boys’ Day leave school, the company has a vested interest in recruiting young talent. In 2013, Lufthansa will once again take on more than 300 young people as apprentices and trainees. Applications must be submitted online via the career portal www.be-lufthansa.com.
