New Haven, Conn – (March 5, 2013) - The team at Digital Surgeons is proud to announce the release of Gumby 2, an update to their popular Gumby Framework. Gumby 2 is the most powerful open-source front-end responsive framework to date. The Gumby Framework aims to streamline the process of responsive website design.

After much of the feedback for the Gumby Framework was centered around the ability to change color options, the team at Digital Surgeons created Gumby 2 with the desire to make customizing everything possible.

The most obvious improvement to Gumby 2 is that the entire framework has been rewritten in SASS, or more specifically the SCSS syntax. Most everything that a user would need in order to completely customize Gumby for use has become a variable. The Gumby 2 update also includes a multitude of mixins that greatly simplify time consuming and annoying tasks associated with responsive design and development.

Gumby 2 has been completely re-architected from the ground up. Here’s an inside look at the new features:

SASS & Compass

The first thing a user will notice about Gumby 2 is that it has been completely rewritten in SASS. Gumby also leverages the power of Compass’ library of mixins to make CSS3 and vendor prefixes less headache inducing. Gumby 2 no longer limits users to a 960px wide grid; nor are they constrained to the limits of 12 or 16 columns. Gumby 2 allows users to work with a grid of any width and with any number of columns.

Google WebFonts

Frameworks should help developers and designers make the web more beautiful, without adding extra work to their schedules. Tasks associated with finding, converting, hosting, serving and browser testing fonts eat up time.

In an effort to make everyone’s life easier, Gumby 2 includes the entire Google WebFont library prepackaged. All that a user has to do is select a font while creating their Gumby build and magically all of the typography on the entire website works right out of the box!

Modular Scale

Gumby 2 is built to have the best typography of any front-end framework available today. By leveraging Modular Scale, perfectly ratio’d typography becomes something that is baked into every single website or application built using the Gumby 2. It makes rapid prototyping better, it makes finished products better, and it makes responsive typography easy.

New fully customizable User Interface library

Farewell green UI. Gumby now sports a modern User Interface with a neutral color palette and your choice of metro or gradated interface treatments.

Entypo Icons

Haven’t you heard? Icons are fonts now! Gumby 2 comes with Entypo’s entire icon library for easy implementation.

Extensible User Interfaces with the Gumby framework Javascript library

Gumby 2 JavaScript library has been completely re-designed from the ground up. Gone are the days of a single object housing all of Gumby’s magic. Now each UI module is abstracted into a separate file, hooking into the global Gumby object in order to keep everything namespaced and provide helpful debugging features.

The JavaScript is still designed to work in the background, bringing the UI kit to life without the need to write any extra code.

Popular user experience conventions including Toggles & Switches, Skiplinks, Fixed navigations and Retina-supported images are all part of this most recent iteration.
