FDA Issues Food-Safety Plan for Imported Foods
EMSL Analytical provides advanced food microbiology testing at our laboratories throughout the U.S.
According to Food Safety News, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced its plan to improve food safety in countries that export to the United States, fulfilling one of the mandates of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) passed by Congress.
The FDA’s plan, International Food Safety Capacity-Building Plan, will work to advance the safety of food production and pathogen surveillance internationally.
The plan contains four major goals. It will guarantee the effectiveness of the FDA’s Food and Veterinary Medicine program, responsible for overseeing the planning and execution of FSMA. The plan will also enhance the effectiveness of food safety in foreign countries by supervising its effect on public health. Next, the plan will oversee the information exchange between the FDA and foreign government agencies by monitoring technologies that allow that information to be shared. Finally, the plan will improve the assistance of capacity-building by strengthening training of foreign food manufacturers and auditors, in addition to pushing for universal laboratory testing procedures.
The FDA plans to implement the International Food Safety Capacity-Building Plan over the course of the next five years, given that it has the funding to do so.
“Currently the United States imports an estimated 15 percent of its food, so it is essential to consumers health that the FDA monitors food production in foreign countries.” states Dr. Jason Dobranic, EMSL Analytical Inc.’s Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences. “EMSL Analytical’s advanced microbiology laboratories are located throughout the country and provide advanced testing to detect foodborne pathogens in food and environmental samples.”
