Tower of Power returns to The San Mateo County Fair to perform two nights on Tuesday, June 11th and Wednesday, June 12th. They will join other headliners that include Dickey Betts and Great Southern, Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, Three Dog Night, Morris Day and the Time and Queen Nation.
 

Tower of Power tours the United States, Japan and Europe, playing to sold out crowds all over the world. Recent releases include Great American Soulbook, a collection of classic soul tunes, and the 40th Anniversary CD/DVD. Tower has never been busier or more in demand. New generations of fans come to see the band perform as their timeless music continues to excite fans of all ages. 

Tower’s musical odyssey began in 1968 when Emilio Castillo met Stephen “Doc” Kupka in July of that year. When Doc auditioned during a band rehearsal at Emilio’s house, Emilio’s father called him into the kitchen and offered the following advice: “Hire that guy, he’s got something.” Doc and his signature baritone sax sound have been in the band ever since. Tower of Power, began playing gigs in 1968, and soon became very well known in the area. With such hits as “Soul Vaccination” and “You’re Still a Young Man,” their hot urban soul sound is as popular as ever.

The band has always claimed Oakland, California as their hometown. Playing area venues and making a name for themselves. When “East Bay Grease” and “Bump City” were released their hits were played on radio stations all over the country. Bandmembers include: Emilio Castillo, band leader, tenor saxophone, Stephen “Doc” Kupka, baritone saxophone, Francis “Rocco” Prestia, bass guitar, David Garibaldi, drums, Tom Polizer, tenor saxophone, Adolfo Acosta, trumpet/flugal horn, Larry Braggs, lead vocals, Sal Cracchiolo, trumpet, Roger Smith, keyboards and Jerry Cortez, guitar.

New this year the Fair brings Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, who rose to fame with the smash hit “We Built This City” and “Jane,” Also performing at the Fair for the first time is Morris Day and the Time, who became an 80’s Pop Funk band favorite with their breakout tune “Jungle Love,” and Queen Nation, a Queen Music Tribute Band that lives up to its promise of Queen’s well known hit “We Will Rock You.  And Three Dog Night with their hits “Mama Told Me (Not to Come),” “One”, and “Joy to the World.” Tower of Power returns to the Fair with two performances.
