A few weeks ago, NBC News published the report, “Sterile drugs often contaminated, pharmacists admit.” The article was written shortly after the peak of the fungal meningitis outbreak caused by contaminated injections that resulted in dozens of deaths and hundreds of infections.
The article references a poll conducted by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. The poll found that 13% believed that “contamination had occurred in the compounded sterile drugs made by their shops last year.” The article goes on to state, “And nearly three-quarters of the 412 health care practitioners who responded said that contamination certainly could occur in drugs from their sites that were supposed to be sterile.”
