Burbank, CA - Novelas Educativas® is using Indiegogo, to raise completion funds for Yo Soy Tu Niña – an original telenovela-style miniseries to address the issue of teen pregnancy among Latinas – nearly twice the national average.  With only eight days left in the campaign, Novelas Educativas® is nearing its fundraising goal.

Yo Soy Tu Niña was motivated by a study commissioned by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and the National Council of La Raza. The study closely examined the high rates (44%) of Latina Teens getting pregnant at least once before age 20.

“Our overall goal is to help parents build knowledge to initiate and continue effective conversations with their children" says Miguel Orozco, Co-Founder of Novelas Educativas®.

The campaign’s goal is to complete the film in April and distribute it in May 2013 for National Teen Pregnancy Month.  Through this initiative, Novelas Educativas® and PCI-Media Impact have joined forces and developed a community-based intervention that uses Entertainment-Education (E-E) strategies.

“We are very excited to collaborate with Novelas Educativas® and use our experience to promote intergenerational dialogue in regards to sexual health in Latino communities,” says Brenda Campos, Programs Director at PCI-Media Impact. “Teenage pregnancy disproportionately affects Latino communities with severe consequences.  We believe it is critical that we address this issue using entertainment media that could connect with people’s emotions and present the complexity behind these life-changing decisions.”

Intended audiences include Latino teens, parents, service providers, and practitioners. “Yo Soy Tu Niña is a powerful film that can help fathers better communicate with their daughters,” says Frank Bedolla, State Director, Fathers and Families Coalition of Utah.
