Rockville, MD, July 19, 2006 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has joined the Center for Identification Technology Research (CITeR), a distinguished academic center at West Virginia University devoted to advancing biometrics through leading edge research. The Corporation will leverage its membership to develop and apply biometrics technologies to critical homeland security requirements.

“We are very pleased to have Lockheed Martin as a member of CITeR broadening our academic and industrial partnerships“ said John D. Weete, Ph.D, vice president for Research and Economic Development at West Virginia University. ”We are looking forward to their participation in the center and their assistance to advance biometric research"

The organization is the first National Science Foundation Industry-University Cooperative Research Center to focus on biometrics, an area of growing importance to achieving homeland security objectives. Among many benefits, CITeR members have the opportunity to shape the direction of the Center’s research and to mentor researchers involved in projects that closely align with industry objectives.

“Lockheed Martin’s membership in CITeR underscores our company’s deep commitment to the development of sophisticated biometrics technology that will help protect our homeland,” remarked Judy F. Marks, president, Lockheed Martin Transportation and Security Solutions. “Some of the sharpest minds in engineering and science have come together through CITeR and we look forward to applying the output of this collaboration between industry and academia to the requirements of our federal, state and local government customers.”

Lockheed Martin designed, developed, deployed and maintains the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS), the world’s largest law enforcement and criminal history database. Containing more than 500 million fingerprints, the IAFIS system has trimmed the time it takes to identify criminals from days to only minutes. Lockheed Martin also has been involved in biometrics technology development through its BioUnique™ Enrollment and BioUnique™ Identity systems. These products enable government agencies to achieve secure, reliable compliance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12, which mandates a government-wide identification standard for all federal employees. As the lead systems integrator on Verified Identity Pass, Inc.’s Registered Traveler program, currently in operation at Orlando International Airport, Lockheed Martin is responsible for the enrollment, biometrics capture, and access control systems that give credentialed individuals expedited access through airport security checkpoints.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 135,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2005 sales of $37.2 billion.
