Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of over 12,000 imported road bicycles and framesets that were listed as 2012 and 2013 models. According to the CPSC release, the steerer tube in the front fork can break, posing a fall hazard.

The CPSC release states, “Consumers should immediately stop using the bicycles and take them to an authorized dealer for free inspection and, if needed, a free repair.” So far there have been several reports of incidents, including one involving a fall with facial injuries and lacerations that required stitches. The imported bicycles were manufactured in Taiwan.

One company that has extensive experience in material testing to prevent costly product recalls or to quickly identify the source of a manufacturing problem is EMSL Analytical, Inc. Their scientists provide a wide range of material testing, characterization, and forensic laboratory services.
