Faulty Part Results in the Recall of Road Bicycles & Framesets
EMSL Analytical offers material testing services to help identify problems with product components to prevent accidents, product failures, and costly product recalls.
Cinnaminson, NJ, February 6, 2013
Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of over 12,000 imported road bicycles and framesets that were listed as 2012 and 2013 models. According to the CPSC release, the steerer tube in the front fork can break, posing a fall hazard.
The CPSC release states, “Consumers should immediately stop using the bicycles and take them to an authorized dealer for free inspection and, if needed, a free repair.” So far there have been several reports of incidents, including one involving a fall with facial injuries and lacerations that required stitches. The imported bicycles were manufactured in Taiwan.
One company that has extensive experience in material testing to prevent costly product recalls or to quickly identify the source of a manufacturing problem is EMSL Analytical, Inc. Their scientists provide a wide range of material testing, characterization, and forensic laboratory services.
“Product failures like this can result in injuries and be extremely costly to manufacturers and distributors,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL. “Challenges in manufacturing, quality assurance, and research and development can happen with many types of products and manufacturing processes. EMSL’s Materials Science Division helps clients develop solutions and discover the root cause of part failures. EMSL’s laboratory is supported by Ph.D. scientists and a broad array of instrumentation that can apply a full spectrum of standard and customized analyses.
