Fast-Growing Manufacturer Chooses Oracle Over SAP

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., 19-JUL-2006 Oracle today announced that Packway Industries Limited, a Hong Kong-based privately-owned decorative lighting manufacturer, has chosen the Oracle( E-Business Suite Special Edition to help drive greater efficiency and productivity. As a key part of the company’s long-term business growth strategy, the Oracle Applications are being deployed in Packway’s Hong Kong head office and its manufacturing plant in China by Bechelon Consulting Limited, a Certified Partner in the Oracle PartnerNetwork.

Founded in 1983, Packway is a fast-growing manufacturer of indoor and outdoor decorative lighting products, with large customers in the U.S., United Kingdom and Europe. To further extend its growth and compete more profitably in the global market, Packway realized it needed to reengineer and automate its internal processes. After a nine-month selection and evaluation process, Packway chose the Oracle E-Business Suite Special Edition over several other software vendors, including SAP.

“We selected Oracle because we needed a versatile applications suite that could provide us with a clear upgrade path to support Packway’s business growth in the long run,” said Ronald K.Y. Fung, Managing Director of Packway Industries Limited. “The Oracle E-Business Suite Special Edition should enable us to consolidate all business processes in a single system at a predictable price today, with the option to adopt additional functionality to meet business requirements later.”

Having run its business on manual, decentralized systems for more than 20 years, Packway was suffering from the lack of integration between its finance, manufacturing and sales operations. By consolidating the supply chain and sales operations with the Oracle E-Business Suite Special Edition, the company will have access to up-to-date inventory data to enable efficient material movement and provide a controlled environment for tracking inventory across its supply chain. In turn, the greater efficiency of material movement and inventory tracking will help contribute to improvements in inventory turnover and customer satisfaction.

The Oracle E-Business Suite Special Edition implementation started in February 2006 with Bechelon mapping out the business processes of Packway. To help local manufacturers address specific challenges of managing increasingly complex operations, Bechelon Consulting Limited has pre-built the manufacturing industry processes and business practices into the Oracle E-Business Suite Special Edition.

“One of the key areas that the solution addresses is the management of processes between the production of goods in factories in China and the export of these goods to markets in the West,” said Toney Chang, Director of Bechelon Consulting Limited. “Our industry experts are working closely with Packway’s management and project team to ensure that Packway reengineers its business smoothly, with modern industry best practices that maximize operational efficiency and effectiveness.”

To address the specific challenges of decorative lighting products seasonal demand, Packway is deploying an additional module - Oracle Manufacturing Scheduling - part of the Oracle E-Business Suite.

“Within Packway’s product portfolio is a number of seasonal products including fiber optic Christmas trees and festival lighting. These always present a challenge for the company in terms of material planning and production schedules,” said Fung.

Oracle Manufacturing Scheduling will help Packway address the company’s seasonal production needs. Its advanced graphical interface enables production management to view the shop floor activities instantly and to reschedule jobs easily with the drag-and-drop rescheduling functionality.

The new Oracle Applications implementation for Packway, which includes Oracle Financials, Oracle Purchasing, Oracle Inventory Management, Oracle Order Management, Oracle Discrete Manufacturing and Oracle Manufacturing Scheduling, is expected to go-live in September 2006.
