British Dentist Struck Off Register After Lack Of Dental Care

A dentist based in Cornwall has been taken off the British Dentistry Register after showing a lack of care towards a number of his patients.

Arpad Toth was warned by the General Dental Council (GDC) over a year ago that his job was under review after he prescribed penicillin to a patient who had a longstanding allergy to the medicine, and died the following month.

The GDC have now taken direct action against the former Bodmin dentist after he left a man with a “pyramid-shaped” tooth and in “considerable pain” for weeks, forcing him to seek an emergency appointment with another dental professional. The UK’s governing body decided Mr. Toth had shown clear signs of neglecting the patients oral health, putting the patient at serious risk.

In a report by the council’s Professional Conduct Committee, another patient had allegedly complained to Mr. Toth after loosing a tooth in 2010 and again in 2011. However Toth failed to investigate it or even offer basic advice. Instead he suggested the patient have the tooth removed without addressing alternative options.

The same patient also suffered three weeks of pain after Mr. Toth prepared another tooth for a crown, but failed to fit a temporary replacement.

The British Association of Clinical Dental Technicians (BACDT), who discourage illegal dentistry and promote the use of experienced dental professionals throughout the UK, agree with the GDC’s action to remove Mr. Toth from the dentistry register.

Speaking on behalf of the company, Richard Daniels, CEO stated: “The number of serious errors made by Mr Toth since the GDC’s investigation began in 2009, clearly illustrates the former dentist represented grave failures in basic clinical practice.”

“There was a distinct lack of empathy towards his patients and his continual justification of misdiagnosis is clear evidence of a woeful lack of insight for a dental professional and oral health expert.” 

"I would recommend to anyone that they always check the dental professional they use is experienced and registered. If there is a clear lack of help or advice then report any complaint to the GDC.”
