Wood Rot Fungi Identified Utilizing Advanced PCR Techniques

EMSL Analytical offers PCR testing services to rapidly identify fungi that cause wood rot.

Many property owners have at one time or another discovered wood damage somewhere on their home or business.  Often times, this damage is blamed on termites, carpenter ants or other wood-destroying insects when the actual cause may be due to wood-decay fungi.

Wood-decay fungi are typically classified into one of several groups.  Brown, soft and white rot fungi each work in unique ways.  Brown rot fungi break down the hemicelluloses and cellulose, soft rot fungi secrete an enzyme that breaks down cellulose and white rot fungi break down the lignin.

These wood rot fungi are of interest to building science consultants as they can cause extensive damage to properties.  The scientists at EMSL Analytical have been studying wood rot fungi for years.  Just a few years ago, scientists from EMSL presented their findings about wood rot fungi at the prestigious American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Expo (AIHce).

Today, EMSL offers wood rot fungi detection utilizing Nested-PCR techniques that are confirmed by DNA barcode sequencing.  Species tested include: Serpula lacrymans, Serpula himantioides, Meruliporia incrassata, Coniophora puteana, Antrodia vaillantii, Antrodia serialis, Postia placenta, Tapinella panuoides, Gloeophyllum trabeum, and Donkioporia expansa.

“PCR testing provides for highly accurate and rapid identification of wood rot fungi,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Being able to identify wood rot due to fungi, instead of other wood destroying pests, allows for the proper corrective actions to be implemented immediately.  This prevents additional damage which in advanced stages may even include structural damage to a building.”
