Vapor Intrusion a Potential Problem, Even in Properties without Basements

The term used to describe the process by which chemical vapors from contaminated soil or groundwater seep into a building is known as vapor intrusion. If chemicals have been spilled, leaked from a storage tank, or illegally dumped, they can soak into the soil and dissolve into the groundwater.  When this occurs the contaminated area may begin to spread in what is often described as a plume.
 
Homes and buildings above the contaminated plume may experience vapors that can enter the structure through cracks in basements, foundations, sewer lines, and other openings.  These vapors can begin to accumulate and reach concentration levels that can be harmful to short or long term health and in extreme circumstances can even be an explosion hazard.
 
“There are numerous contaminated sites across virtually every state in the country,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, a leading vapor intrusion testing laboratory.  “People often think that if they don’t have a basement, then vapor intrusion issues aren’t a concern.  Unfortunately, that is not the case.  Almost any type of structure above or near a contaminated area has the potential to have vapor intrusion issues.  The only true way to know if the indoor air quality has been impacted by chemical vapors is to have the air tested.  Testing provided by EMSL will identify contaminants in the air to help determine if there is a problem.  If vapors are found, there are vapor mitigation systems that can be installed to help rectify the situation and protect people’s health,” he continued.
