Elevated Radon Levels Found in About 1 in 15 U.S. Homes

EMSL Analytical offers radon test kits and analysis to help prevent exposure to the invisible killer.

After declaring January National Radon Testing Month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced steps for individuals to take to protect themselves from harmful radon gas.

Radon is a radioactive gas that is produced naturally from the decay of uranium in soil, and can accumulate to dangerous levels in homes and buildings. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in the U.S. and claims the lives of about 21,000 Americans each year, according to the EPA.

The EPA suggests that homes, schools, workplaces, and other buildings with or without basements should be tested for radon. EMSL Analytical offers a Do-It-Yourself Radon Test Kit that is a quick and affordable way to test the level of radon in any building. Once samples are taken, the kits can be sent back to EMSL for analysis. The EPA recommends contacting a qualified radon-reduction contractor if radon levels are found to be at or above 4 picoCuries per Liter (pCi/L).

To order a Do-It-Yourself Radon Test Kit from EMSL visit www.RadonTestingLab.com or call 1-888-958-8170.

“Exposure to radon is a preventable health risk, but since radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas the only way to determine if radon is present in a building is through testing,” states Garrett Ray, EMSL Analytical’s Radiological Laboratory Manager. “EMSL Analytical, Inc. provides quality radon testing at our fully equipped and accredited laboratory to help prevent unnecessary exposure and to determine if your home has elevated levels of the dangerous gas.”
