Elevated Radon Levels Found in About 1 in 15 U.S. Homes

After declaring January National Radon Testing Month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced steps for individuals to take to protect themselves from harmful radon gas.

Radon is a radioactive gas that is produced naturally from the decay of uranium in soil, and can accumulate to dangerous levels in homes and buildings. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in the U.S. and claims the lives of about 21,000 Americans each year, according to the EPA.

The EPA suggests that homes, schools, workplaces, and other buildings with or without basements should be tested for radon.
