Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 1,500 Muddy Outdoors tree climbing sticks that were sold nationwide at several large sporting goods chains.  According to the CPSC release, the climbing sticks can break, posing risk of serious injury or death to users.  The climbing sticks were sold from July 2012 through October of last year.

The CPSC release states, “The recalled Muddy Outdoors climbing sticks are used to climb trees. They consist of a 20-inch black center stick with tree cleats and fold-out steps on each end. A black and burnt orange-colored rope fastened by a cam cleat secures the stick to the tree. The tree cleats have single metal tabs or posts. Model number 70401 or 70404 is printed on the packaging. The climbing sticks were sold individually or in packs of four.”

The climbing sticks were manufactured in China and the firm has received multiple reports of the product breaking.  Product failures like this can result in injuries and be extremely costly to manufacturers and distributors.  When a part failure comes to light, it is important that the root cause of the failure be quickly investigated and understood.  One company that has extensive experience in this field is EMSL Analytical, Inc.

“Challenges in manufacturing, quality assurance, and research and development are all areas where EMSL’s Materials Science Division can help companies investigate products and develop solutions,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL.  “EMSL’s laboratory is supported by Ph.D. scientists and a broad array of instrumentation that can apply a full spectrum of standard and customized analyses including elemental and chemical, structural, particle, surface, contaminant, mechanical, failure, and bio-effectiveness to projects,” he continued.
