Food Product Recalls Due to Allergens under the Spotlight
EMSL Analytical offers allergen and nutritional labeling services to help food companies comply with food labeling regulations.
Cinnaminson, NJ, January 15, 2013
Last month, ABC News published a report about food allergens and the large number of product recalls due to food allergens over the past several years. According to their report, “An ABC News analysis found more than 400 recalls for undeclared allergens in food reported to the FDA since March 2009. More than 140 of them were for desserts and snack foods, like cookies, candy and ice cream.”
An allergy is an exaggerated immune response to a substance. People can be allergic to almost any substance and for many this includes various foods. Food allergens can have a devastating impact and even be life-threatening to people who unknowingly consume products with ingredients they should avoid.
While more than 160 foods can cause allergic reactions in people with food allergies, the law identifies the eight most common allergenic foods as “major food allergens”. They include:
- Peanuts
- Tree Nuts
- Eggs
- Wheat
- Milk
- Soybeans
- Fish
- Crustacean Shellfish
