In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns over exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.  This list includes cadmium and cadmium compounds which were added to the Prop 65 list in 1987.

Cadmium is a naturally occurring element found in the earth’s crust.  Today, about three-fourths of cadmium is used as an electrode component in some types of batteries, with the remainder used in pigments, coatings, and platings, or as a stabilizer for plastics.

Workers in many industries face potential exposure to cadmium. The potential for exposure is highest among workers in electroplating, metal machining, plastics, ceramics, paint, and welding or soldering operations. Workers may also be exposed to cadmium from the smelting and refining of metals or from air in industrial plants that manufacture batteries, coatings, or plastics. Workers involved in landfill operations, the recycling of electronic parts, or the recycling of plastics are also at risk for potential exposure.

“Exposure to cadmium may be dangerous to workers’ health in jobs in which they are exposed to cadmium dust or fumes,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “The primary and most serious adverse health effects of long-term exposure to cadmium include kidney dysfunction, lung cancer, and prostate cancer. Cadmium may cause local skin or eye irritation, and can affect long-term health if inhaled or ingested. LA Testing provides testing services to help prevent exposure to this potentially dangerous material.”
