Europe’s longest airport people mover system offers world-beating availability levels for 10 million passengers every year

Madrid - Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation announced today that it has signed a contract with AENA Aeropuertos Españoles S.A. to continue to provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services for the BOMBARDIER INNOVIA APM (automated people mover) system at Madrid-Barajas International Airport. The 10-year contract is valued at approximately 41 million euro ($54 million US) and has immediate effect.

Operating since early 2006, the Bombardier built transport solution was the first driverless transit system in Spain. It is the longest airport people mover system in Europe, transporting around 10 million passengers every year between Madrid-Barajas airport’s main terminal T4 and its satellite terminal more than 2 km away.

The system deploys BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 550 automatic train control technology and is the only mode of transportation for passengers between the two terminals. During its six years in service, the INNOVIA APM has served the Madrid-Barajas airport with average availability levels of 99.8 per cent, ensuring uninterrupted reliable service.

Alvaro Rengifo, President, Bombardier Transportation in Spain, said: “Our INNOVIA system’s superior construction quality and optimal service are renowned across the Spanish rail sector. Its stellar performance has helped us to win other reference projects in the country, such as the CITYFLO 650 CBTC system for Metro Madrid. This in turn led us to set up the Bombardier Rail Control Solutions engineering centre in Madrid, inaugurated in 2011. We will ensure that the system will continue to serve the airport with record levels of availability and readiness, transporting millions of riders annually until 2022 and beyond.”

The CITYFLO 550 solution of the airport system is a foundation on which Bombardier developed the innovative CITYFLO 650 communications based train protection and control system. This enables a reduction in headways between trains, thereby optimising train operation and reducing waiting times for passengers at stations.

Bombardier Transportation is a leading innovator in sustainable mobility. Its highly reliable driverless systems support the urgently needed shift from road to rail to reduce congestion and pollution at major cities and airports. INNOVIA driverless systems have served communities around the world for more than 40 years. Many of these systems benefit from Bombardier’s complete life cycle and support O&M services. Installed systems include Frankfurt, Germany; Rome, Italy; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore; Madrid-Barajas, Spain; Atlanta, Dallas Fort/Worth, Denver, Houston, Miami, Orlando, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Sacramento, Seattle-Tacoma and Tampa, USA.
