Lastminute.com reveals Oxford Street still number one for London’s Christmas shoppers

Over a third of Londoners will make at least one trip to Oxford Street this year with the purpose of Christmas shopping according to research from lastminute.com. The convenience and comfort of the Westfield Shopping Mall and online shopping come a close second and third to Oxford Street. London’s trendier shopping districts such as Portobello Road, Knightsbridge and the Southbank Centre Christmas markets, meanwhile, prove to be the least popular with London shoppers this Christmas.

Despite a doom-laden forecast for the traditional high street, stiff competition from the Olympics-born Stratford Westfield City shopping centre and campaigns to pedestrianise the West End, Oxford Street has managed to hold onto its crown as the shopping destination of choice for Londoners.

Londoner’s attitudes towards Christmas Shopping remain ambivalent. Just under a third of those surveyed claimed to love the Christmas shopping experience. The vast majority of Londoners consider shopping as only a “necessary part of the build up to Christmas” and neither love nor hate it.

Not only do Londoners appear to remain dispassionate about their Christmas shopping, they also put it off until the last minute. Only 6% of those surveyed expected to have completed their Xmas shopping by 15th December. A significant 59% expect to still be doing their gift-buying on at the last minute on Christmas Eve.
