The Council of Engineering & Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB) releases important document discussing the role and benefits of credentials for engineers and allied professionals.

The Council of Engineering & Scientific Specialty Boards and the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) recently released a consensus document about credentials for engineers and allied professionals.  The document concisely describes the role of licenses, certifications, the relationship between the two, their appropriate uses, and their benefits to consumers, employers, and practitioners.

The new document, Engineering Credentials, states “The various credentials for engineers and allied professionals and the continued increase in the number of such credentials create confusion for practitioners and consumers alike. Many have recognized that this confusion compromises the effectiveness of these credentials. Some of the confusion is due to lack of understanding about credentials, their benefits and limitations, and credentialing terminology. To address these needs, the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards and the National Society of Professional Engineers have collaborated to prepare this tutorial on credentials for engineers and allied professionals.”

The document discusses how credentials, both licenses and accredited certifications, offer benefits to credentialed practitioners, their employers, and consumers of practitioners’ services. It also offers definitions of mis-understood and mis-used credentialing terms.

“CESB informs employers, specifiers, public officials, the public, and engineering and related practitioners of the benefits of specialty certifications,” stated William Anderson, P.E., DEE, Executive Director at CESB. “We feel this document helps to achieve these goals and bring clarity to the important issue of engineering credentials.”
