A group of foster carers from Flintshire got their daubers and their dabbers out and at the ready for a prize bingo event that raised hundreds of pounds for the Bulgarian children’s charity, the For Our Children (FOC) foundation.

Gwen Jones from Axton, who helped organise the event, is a part of the fostering community with the UK’s leading agency, Foster Care Associates (FCA), and is a passionate supporter of FOC. Staged at the Colwyn Bay Rugby Club, the evening raised over £130 for the children’s charity, which was then doubled to £260, by FCA.

Established in 2002, the For Our Children foundation provides foster care for abandoned and orphaned children so that they can be part of a safe and secure family, as opposed to living in isolated children’s institutions. As a leading provider of children’s services, FCA partners FOC by sharing best practice, helping to recruit and train foster carers as well as offering practical support and donations.

Gwen, along with other fellow FCA foster carers, recently attended a conference in Bulgaria and met some of the orphans that the FOC foundation supports. Through meeting the children, Gwen felt inspired to host on-going events that could help raise the much needed funds to support this worthwhile cause.

Gwen commented: "We left the UK as carer reps and colleagues, but returned from our trip as a group of good friends on a mission to make a difference to children in Bulgaria.

“I’d like to give a huge thanks to the foster families that supported us at the bingo event, FCA for their generous contribution, and the rugby club for donating the room.”

Victor Thomas, regional manager at FCA Cymru commented on the fundraising efforts of FCA foster carers, including Gwen: "FCA foster carers are enthusiastic people with big hearts and huge amounts of patience for children.

“The fundraising effort of FCA foster carers demonstrates their caring attitude and dedication to improving the lives of children both in Wales and internationally.”

FCA is continually looking to recruit further foster carers in Wales who can make a difference to the lives of children and young people in need. Foster carers come from all backgrounds, ethnicities and religions. They can be single, married, cohabiting, in a same sex couple or heterosexual, but the qualities they possess overall are patience, resilience and a dedication to providing the best possible care for the children they look after.
