Houston, TX December 13, 2012 - The first trial dates for NuvaRing, set for May of 2013, have been postponed by U.S. District Judge, Rodney Sippel, until July 8, 2013.

The change comes as the 2012 Statistical Analysis from the Judicial Panel on Multi District Litigation reports as many as 1,028 NuvaRing lawsuits have been moved to Judge Sippel’s federal court in Missouri.

According to D. Miller & Associates, PLLC: “Although the defendant has not indicated whether or not they intend to settle outside of court, it is believed the maker of NuvaRing is considering the possibility of avoiding trial so as to avoid high costs and large jury awards.”

NuvaRing, manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc., is an etonogestrel/ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring used for the prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use this product as a method of contraception. It has been shown to have a variety of side effects, the most dangerous being:

  • Blood clots
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack

A recent study by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that vaginal rings like NuvaRing subject its users to a much higher risk of blood clots than traditional birth control pills.

Their study indicates that continuous exposure vaginal rings such as Nuvaring, may potentially result in high exposure to extrogen with a possible increased thromboembolic risk.

So far, the FDA has received almost 2,000 reports of blood clot injury in patients using NuvaRing with hospitalization resulting in 30% of cases.

Anyone who has used the NuvaRing contraceptive device and suffered any of these injuries is urged to contact a NuvaRing attorney immediately to discuss their legal rights.

The later trial dates will give those who have yet to learn their options after an injury more time to do so. However, if you were injured by NuvaRing and have not filed a claim, delaying any longer might not be advisable.
