EMSL is proud to announce our contribution to the discovery of a new fungal species. Along with colleagues from the U.S., Italy, Czech Republic, and Hungary, EMSL has discovered a new species in the black Aspergilli group.

Data was used from 52 air samples in homes and four outside samples from 17 U.S. states, Bermuda, Martinique, Trinidad and Tobago, and one from almonds in the Czech Republic. Through molecular data and macro-morphological observations, two new species related to A. aculeatus and A. aculeatinus were discovered.

Fungi from this group are involved in food spoilage, used to produce food additives, and can cause allergic asthma.

Aspergillus violaceofuscus and A. aculeatus have previously only been found in the tropics. However, EMSL found that Aspergillus violaceofuscus is a very common species in the environment of Southern and Mid-Atlantic regions in the United States.

“EMSL is proud to have our scientists contributing to the industry at such a high level,” states Dr. Jason Dobranic, EMSL Analytical Inc.’s Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences. “EMSL Analytical’s advanced microbiology laboratories are located throughout the country and provide state-of-the-art testing to detect microorganisms in environmental samples.”
