During the mid-1900s, textured paints and coatings were commonly used in many residential and commercial properties.  Many of these buildings are still in use today.  Unfortunately, a number of these materials  contained asbestos.

Textured paints and coatings were used for both decorative and protective purposes. Asbestos was added to  these materials due to its strength and insulating properties.  When still in good condition and not being disturbed, these materials usually pose little health concern.  However, as many of these  buildings are now decades old, the asbestos containing materials begin to degrade and could release fibers into the air.  These materials are also often disturbed during renovation and remodeling activities. This can create a health hazard for both workers and building occupants.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Exposure to airborne friable asbestos may result in a potential health risk because persons breathing the air may breathe in asbestos fibers. Continued exposure can increase the amount of fibers that remain in the lung. Fibers embedded in lung tissue over time may cause serious lung diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer, or mesothelioma. Smoking increases the risk of developing illness from asbestos exposure.”

One of the leading asbestos testing laboratories in North America is EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Textured paints and coatings are just an example of dozens of places asbestos may be found in older homes and buildings,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical. “EMSL offers quick and affordable testing services to determine the presence of asbestos in textured paints and coatings as well as all types of building materials to help prevent people being exposed to this potentially deadly material.”
