In a letter dated November 2012, QinetiQ CEO Leo Quinn confirmed to the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust (FAST) that the company is willing to donate £10,000 towards the cost of a statue of Samuel Franklin Cody, one of the early pioneers of aviation to be erected in time for the 100th anniversary of his death in August 2013.

In his letter, Leo Quinn wrote

“I am pleased to confirm that QinetiQ is delighted to contribute £10,000 to support the erection in Farnborough of a statue of Samuel Franklin Cody, marking the centenary of his death in 1913.

“As you may know, your request for support was picked up by a number of employees and they brought the request to the attention of their line managers, suggesting that QinetiQ should be associated with the project. Samuel Franklin Cody has a strong tie to Farnborough and QinetiQ and, consequently, many of our employees feel an affiliation and desire to support one of the greatest early aviators. We therefore feel that it is appropriate that QinetiQ supports this project.”

QinetiQ join both Rushmoor Borough Council and Hampshire County Council which have already made substantial contributions to the fund which is being administered by FAST, a registered charity.

Further details of the project are available at http://www.codystatue.org.uk/ or from FAST on 07702 742594
