Action Scuba Montreal receives prestigious 2012 Project AWARE Award for Environmental Conservation
Action Scuba, a Montreal, Quebec based scuba diving centre, this week received global recognition from PADI and Project AWARE for their outstanding work in marine conservation and education.
Montreal, Canada (November 15, 2012) Action Scuba, a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre serving greater Montreal, has been awarded the 2012 Project AWARE Award for Environmental Achievement at the prestigious PADI LIVE awards ceremony held this week in Las Vegas. This award recognizes the extraordinary commitment of the Action Scuba team towards marine conservation driven by their love of the underwater world.
Selected from among all of the PADI dive centres in North and South America by a panel of industry experts and conservation leaders, Action Scuba has received the Project AWARE Award for Environmental Achievement for their ongoing work in promoting conservation through education and fund-raising, as well as through hands-on work in cleaning up the planet’s beaches and waterways.
Alex Earl, Executive Director, Project AWARE Foundation, calls out Action Scuba as a leader and role model for other dive centres around the world to follow. “Throughout 2012, Action Scuba has been an exemplary champion of ocean conservation. The Action Scuba team has spread awareness of sharks in peril and collected petition signatures for the protection of sharks globally; they have regularly contributed data on marine debris for the Project AWARE Dive Against Debris program; and they regularly worked to raise funds for Project AWARE’s critical conservation mission including becoming the first 100% AWARE partner in Canada. These are just a few highlights of the vital conservation measures and fundraising they have taken part in. I applaud the passion and leadership of Action Scuba on critical environmental issues and I congratulate them on this well-earned award.”
The notion of environmental awareness and protection are woven into every scuba diving or snorkeling course taught at Action Scuba, and the team’s goal is not just to develop scuba divers, but also to help ignite people’s passions for the ocean world.
Gary Davis, owner of Action Scuba and a PADI Course Director, explains his team’s motivations for taking a conservation leadership role. “People learn to scuba dive because they want to explore the 70% of the planet that’s underwater. There’s an incredible world just waiting to be discovered and enjoyed, but without protection, some of the greatest marine treasures, such as ancient reefs and incredible creatures like sharks, will simply cease to exist. As scuba divers, we’re caretakers of this underwater world, and we have to do everything we can to ensure it exists for future generations to enjoy. Thankfully, through our efforts, we have built a large community of aware and compassionate divers who can act as ambassadors for the entire marine world. We encourage everyone to join us.”
