Mönchengladbach, Germany - - Leading contract logistics specialist DHL Supply Chain has officially opened its logistics center in Mönchengladbach for its customer Primark. The facility launched operations with 150 employees. This number is expected to increase to 250 over the next several years as the logistics center expands. Located in the “Regiopark” near highway A 61, the warehouse will supply Primark retail stores in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Austria. The growing fashion retailer Primark already relies on DHL and its logistics expertise in three European countries. With 2008 marking the start of the first Primark-DHL logistics center in Great Britain and 2010 in Spain, the Irish retailer has now built another, this time in Germany, together with the retail experts at DHL Supply Chain.

“Operations at the new Primark-DHL logistics center have taken off smoothly, and the facility’s strategically selected location has proven itself the perfect choice. We look forward to expanding our business with the growing Irish textile retailer in the years to come,” says Martin Seidenberg, CEO of DHL Supply Chain Germany & Alps. “Our plans to increase the facility’s processing capacities over time are good news for the region in terms of new jobs and opportunities.”

“Primark has been successful in its expansion strategy, with nearly 250 retail stores throughout Western Europe, from which 14 are directly supplied by Mönchengladbach. We are pleased with the successful launch of our partnership here in Mönchengladbach,” says Wolfgang Krogmann, Director General Primark Northern Europe. “We chose DHL as our logistics partner because it meets all of our needs. We are looking forward to watching our business grow in this location as well.”

DHL Supply Chain developed a customized logistics solution for Primark that covers all warehouse-based activities as well as transport to Primark stores. The logistics center, with a ground area of 40,000 sq m, is custom-built to fit the needs of DHL’s Ireland-based customer. The facility features a hanging garment racking and rail transport system and is built to warehouse and dispatch carton-packed fashion garments. Prepared to grow together with that of Primark’s business, the facility will have the capability to pick and transport as many as 16 million shipments annually.

Primark was founded in 1969 in Dublin, Ireland. The company opened its first retail store in the Netherlands - in Rotterdam - in December 2008. Primark was introduced to Germany’s retail market a year later in 2009. Eight retail stores have opened since then in Germany, as well as two in Austria, one in Belgium and a further two in the Netherlands.
