David Petraeus Resigns After Confirming Adultery

After releasing news of the affair that had disrupted his marriage of nearly 40 years, David Petraeus resigns as Director of CIA. What else do we know about adultery and possible divorce online in 2012 based on 2010 Census results and other stats?

David Petraeus, the director of the CIA, resigned from his position this Friday, the week that bookended Barack Obama’s victory for reelection. What has many Americans and others around the world scratching their heads is why Petraeus resigned…

In a statement released by James R. Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence on Friday, it came to be known that Petraeus had been having an extramarital affair, and that he had asked President Obama for a proper resignation the Thursday before the announcement came.

There has been no mention yet as to whether the affair will mean Petraeus will file for divorce. Online reports from Thomson Reuters and the Olympian, among others, suggest a strong sense of remorse on the CIA Director’s part. Petraeus is noted to have said, “After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation.”

It is not clear if the now-former director will use his time away from a nearly four-decade-old career to refocus on family or if he simply felt it was morally wrong to carry on in his professional capacity knowing he had committed adultery. The question of how to divorce after 37 years of marriage is a tough one, no doubt, and hopefully one that Petraeus will be able to avoid with help.

According to 2012 data collected by PolitiFact, between 40% and 50% of marriages end in divorce. The 2010 US Census confirmed that 29% of all marriages among women aged 15-44 ended in divorce, annulment, or separation. In the United States, more of those will be dissolved with divorce online in 2012 than ever before. Given that this is the trend, it is also quite likely that most young people getting married in the coming year will know how to divorce online before ever taking their vows. http://www.reliabledivorce.com
