According to the Associated Press, cadmium-tainted jewelry that is targeted toward pre-teens continues to be sold in retail stores across the United States.

Over two years ago, it was reported that numerous Chinese factories used cadmium as a substitute for lead, but the extent of the contamination was never determined.

Contaminated jewelry has become less of an issue in the United States. However, last year, cadmium-containing rings, bracelets, and pendants that were marketed toward preteen girls were discovered on store shelves in Los Angeles, suburban San Francisco, central Ohio, and upstate New York.

Cadmium is a toxic metal and classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to the metal is known to cause cancer, liver damage, heart damage, kidney failure, and circulatory failure.

“It is especially hazardous for children and preteens to be exposed to cadmium because their bodies may be more susceptible to the metal’s dangerous effects,” states Shannon Kauffman, Manager of EMSL’s Metals Laboratory. “EMSL Analytical, the nation’s leading commercial testing laboratory, provides cadmium testing in our metals testing laboratories across the United States.”
