Non-profit included in Facebook Gifts integration to benefit charities

Kansas City, Missouri,-- In today’s online world, conversations begin and life events are celebrated on social platforms like Facebook. Whether the events happen to be birthdays, weddings, graduations, or holidays, more than ever before, people are looking to devote these events to the causes they support. Water.org is excited to be included in today’s introduction of charitable giving through Facebook Gifts, the social platform’s recently launched product that enables real-time gift giving through Facebook.

Water.org has long used Facebook to engage and connect with our supporters, showcase our work, and tell the stories of the people around the world who are affected by the water crisis. We are confident that the inclusion of Water.org in this program will enable us to connect with our supporters in a completely new way while introducing future supporters to our work.

“Helping others just got a whole lot more social” said Matt Damon, co-founder of Water.org. He continued, “It’s our basic human nature to want to help others. Making it easier for people to connect charities they support to the celebrations they share online will make the world a better place for all of us.”

Water.org continues to promote, explore, and launch new ideas that engage supporters of the water crisis online. With no fewer than five new sites launched over the past twelve months, Water.org has integrated its campaigns directly with Facebook Connect, Twitter OAuth, and Pinterest.

In November of 2011, Water.org launched the consumer advocacy site ToiletDay.org and also give.Water.org which enables supporters to fundraise online. In March, for the third year in a row, WaterDay.org invited users to “donate their voice” to the water cause and generated millions of online impressions. For Mother’s Day, Water.org encouraged visitors to “honor their mother” and content was seamlessly posted online and on Pinterest. And finally this summer, TEAM.Water.org launched in response to requests for an online community by performance athletes who support the water crisis.

“Technology enables us to connect to the causes we support in so many new and exciting ways,” said Mike McCamon, chief community officer of Water.org. “To achieve our vision of universal access to safe water and sanitation, we have to see the problem differently. Charity alone cannot solve the crisis. Engaging supporters online has increased the velocity of the entire water sector’s work around the world.”

Other organizations included in the launch of charitable giving in Facebook Gifts include American Red Cross, Blue Star Families, Boys & Girls Club of America, DonorsChoose.org, Girls, Inc., Kiva, Livestrong Foundation, Oxfam, RAINN, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
