Hurricane Sandy Threatens U.S. East Coast

Hurricane Sandy is currently moving north at 18mph, with wind of 105 mph, through the Bahamas as a Category 2 hurricane. Recent predictions expect the hurricane to hit the U.S. east coast near Maryland and Delaware on October 28th and move up the coast until it reaches New England between October 29th and October 30th.

As the hurricane moves north across the Atlantic, meteorologists have predicted that it will reach a dip in the jet stream with a lot of energy coming in from the West, which will pull the storm into the U.S. coastline. If the hurricane stays on this track, northeastern U.S. states will experience a powerful storm even it does not develop into a hurricane.

Threats of this storm include heavy rainfall causing flooding, high winds, power outages, and blocked roads. Meteorologists have predicted that Sandy’s damages could total up to $1 billion, according to Reuters.
