Hurricane Sandy Threatens U.S. East Coast
EMSL Analytical offers testing services, including mold testing, following hurricanes to prevent damages to households.
Hurricane Sandy is currently moving north at 18mph, with wind of 105 mph, through the Bahamas as a Category 2 hurricane. Recent predictions expect the hurricane to hit the U.S. east coast near Maryland and Delaware on October 28th and move up the coast until it reaches New England between October 29th and October 30th.
As the hurricane moves north across the Atlantic, meteorologists have predicted that it will reach a dip in the jet stream with a lot of energy coming in from the West, which will pull the storm into the U.S. coastline. If the hurricane stays on this track, northeastern U.S. states will experience a powerful storm even it does not develop into a hurricane.
Threats of this storm include heavy rainfall causing flooding, high winds, power outages, and blocked roads. Meteorologists have predicted that Sandy’s damages could total up to $1 billion, according to Reuters.
With extreme flooding, mold poses a great threat in homes and buildings. Exposure to active mold growth can cause health problems in infants, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems.
“After flooding occurs, many building occupants find that the water damage has also led to mold growth,” states Diane Miskowski, MPH, Business Development Manager at EMSL Analytical. “EMSL Analytical has created a quick and affordable ‘Do-It-Yourself Mold Kit’ that anyone can use to determine whether mold growth is present in a residence or building.”
