The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported a voluntary recall issued by Nature’s Recipe of a limited supply of Nature’s Recipe Oven Backed Biscuits with Real Chicken due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The potentially affected lots of the Oven Baked Biscuits were primarily distributed to pet specialty retailers throughout the U.S. The products included in this recall have best by dates of 10/11/13 and 10/12/13 and are sold in 19-ounce stand-up, re-sealable pouches.

Although no illnesses have been reported to date, the company has issued this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure.

The infected pet food puts both pets and humans at risk of acquiring Salmonella poisoning. While consumption of the product is an obvious risk for pets, handling the product may pose a less apparent risk for humans.

Pets infected with Salmonella may develop diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Infected pets can become carriers of the bacteria and infect other pets or humans. Individuals infected with Salmonella usually develop fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after consumption, and the illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Rarely, Salmonella may spread from the intestines to other parts of the body and may be fatal if not treated properly with antibiotics, or could lead to arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms, according to the FDA.

“Healthy individuals are usually able to recover from Salmonella without treatment, but children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems are susceptible to developing severe illness in which hospitalization is required,” states Dr. Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., EMSL’s Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences. “EMSL Analytical has experience providing advanced microbiology testing in food and environmental samples to detect Salmonella and other foodborne pathogens for food manufacturers and consumers.”
