Anglo American Recognised by CDP for Climate Change Disclosure and Performance
Anglo American has been commended by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for its disclosure of climate change information and for the action it is taking to reduce emissions and mitigate the risks of climate change.
CDP, which represents 655 institutional investors with $78 trillion in assets, has featured Anglo American in booth their Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index and Carbon Performance Leadership Index. The indices highlight FTSE 350 companies that have demonstrated a best practice approach to climate strategy, emissions reduction and disclosure regarding climate change.
Cynthia Carroll, Chief Executive of Anglo American, said: “Anglo American is proud to be recognised by the CDP as one of the world’s leading companies – and the leader in our industry - in terms of sustainable reporting practices and integrating climate change into business strategy. For example, we have established an industry leading energy and C02 programme called ECO2MAAN, which enables us to understand our future energy consumption and carbon foot print at every site, and identify and prioritise our carbon abatement activities. We have clear water, carbon and energy efficiency targets at each of our operations around the world and we are investing in the development of innovative technologies such as carbon capture and storage and methane emissions.”
“Sustainability is embedded in everything we do, starting at the top with our strategy and values, through to the policies and processes that underpin every aspect of our work,” Mrs Carroll added.
Compiled by PwC on behalf of CDP, the indices provide an evaluation tool for institutional investors and other stakeholders. Companies are scored on their climate change disclosure and high scores indicate good internal data management and understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company.
This year the disclosure index comprises 35 companies from the FTSE 350, based on analysis of the responses to CDP’s survey which focused on greenhouse gas emissions, emissions reduction targets and the risks and opportunities associated with climate change.
Paul Simpson, chief executive officer of CDP, commented: “Companies that make both the Carbon Disclosure and Performance Leadership Indices have demonstrated strong internal data management practices for the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and energy use. They are also giving clear consideration to the business issues related to climate change and their exposure to climate-related risks and opportunities. This is vital to realising greater efficiencies, protecting the business from risk and capitalizing on opportunities.”
