With criticism of soda escalating over its high calorie and sugar content, Coca Cola, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper have decided to administer new vending machines that will display each drink’s calories, according to the Huffington Post. This decision was voluntary and comes ahead of a regulation that will eventually require restaurants and vending machines to list calorie information on sodas.

According to the American Beverage Association (ABA), the new vending machine will provide each drinks calorie count on the button that will have to be pressed in order to purchase the drink. The ABA has also stated that the machine will be offering some lower-calorie and zero-calorie drink options for consumers.

The vending machines are estimated to launch in 2013, appearing first in Chicago and San Antonio municipal buildings. Currently, vending machines sales account for 13 percent of total soda sales in the United States.

“With the increased media and political spotlight on food, nutrition, and calories, we see more companies looking to put nutritional content in untraditional places, such as vending machines and menus,” states Shannon Kauffman, Food Chemistry Laboratory Manager at EMSL, a leading national food testing lab. “EMSL’s experienced staff provides nutritional labeling expertise to help the food industry, government regulators, and consumers analyze products and abide by food labeling regulations.”
