Recognized for their extraordinary work in their specialty practice, six San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine Physicians have been selected by their peers as San Diego’s Physicians of Exceptional Excellence.

San Diego County Medical Society (SDCMS) has partnered with San Diego Magazine to help identify board-certified physicians held in the highest regard by their peers. Each honoree was reviewed to confirm board certification, Medical Board of California standing and current practice status. SDCMS members then selected doctors to whom they would refer their patients and family members. Honorees are then recognized in San Diego Magazine and at a celebration hosted by the Magazine.

San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine physicians honored include Sue Bodtke, MD; Kim Bower, MD; Jeremy Hirst, MD; Scott Irwin, MD, PhD; Julie Prazich, MD; and Holly Yang, MD.

“I am so proud of our San Diego Hospice physicians, who have been recognized for their excellence in care and noted as experts in their areas of practice,” said Kathleen Pacurar, President and CEO of San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine. “It is an honor to work with these amazing individuals and I congratulate them, and all those honored as Physicians of Exceptional Excellence.”

Dr. Sue Bodtke and Dr. Julie Prazich specialize in hospice and palliative medicine and have worked with our home care teams in caring for patients and their families, as well as in San Diego Hospice’s Inpatient Care Centers in Hillcrest and Carlsbad.
Dr. Kim Bower oversees the San Diego Hospice Children’s Program, which is a nationally-recognized, award-winning model in pediatric hospice care.

Dr. Scott Irwin is Chief of Psychiatry and Psychosocial Services at San Diego Hospice and was the first to establish the only full-time Palliative Care Psychiatry program affiliated with a hospice. Dr. Jeremy Hirst runs the Child and Adolescent Palliative Care Psychiatry Program at San Diego Hospice, working with Dr. Irwin, which provides comprehensive psychiatric diagnostic assessment and treats children and adolescents with severe medical illnesses, such as cancer, pulmonary, neurologic, gastrointestinal, and muscular diseases.

Dr. Holly Yang came to San Diego Hospice as a physician fellow and is now the Assistant Director of the International Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program, mentoring physicians from around the world.

In addition, Dr. Sue Bodkte, Dr. Julie Prazich, Dr. Kim Bower and Dr. Holly Yang are the only San Diego physicians to be recognized as Physicians of Exceptional Excellence in the field of Hospice and Palliative Medicine this year. All 2012 Top Doctors are recognized in the October issue of San Diego Magazine.
