According to the Huffington Post, Trader Joe’s-brand peanut butter has been recalled after 29 fell ill with Salmonella in 18 states following consumption of the product.

The company responsible for production of the tainted peanut butter has been unable to identify the source of the Salmonella at this point. Therefore, as precaution, the company has issued a recall of 14 additional brand names that they have manufactured and distributed to stores around the United States—despite no Salmonella being detected.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that the Salmonella strain discovered in Trader Joe’s peanut butter was extremely difficult to detect, which may explain why food safety procedures performed by the company failed to detect any Salmonella prior to distribution.

To date there have been no reported deaths linked to this contamination. The Huffington Post has provided a complete list of all nut butter products included in this recall.

Individuals suffering from Salmonella food poisoning develop fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the contaminated product, and the illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most individuals infected with Salmonella recover without treatment; however, young children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems may develop more severe illnesses where hospitalization is required.

“Once someone consumes a product tainted with even a small amount of Salmonella, the bacteria multiplies in the small intestine and may cause an infection from there,” states EMSL’s Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences, Dr. Jason Dobranic, Ph.D. “EMSL Analytical’s advanced microbiology laboratories are located throughout the country and provide advanced testing to detect Salmonella and other foodborne pathogens from food and environmental samples.”
